Reflections on May 23rd Join us on Sunday, May 23rd, to wander through the poppy-fields of conversation about our individual concepts of Altered States of Consciousness. Bring a dish to share (or just come) to 9219 George Williams Road, Knoxville, 37922, starting at 4:00 pm [call 865.690.8742 for directions).
Wikipedia list 23 states of consciousness ranging from coma through daydreams and delirium, including depersonalization, hypnosis, hysteria, meditation, to sexual pleasure, sleep, and wakefulness.
An altered state of consciousness is any condition significantly different from a normal waking state. The expression was used as early as 1969 by Dr. Charles Tart and describes induced changes in one's mental state, almost always temporary. A synonymous phrase is "altered states of awareness".
At this meeting, we will reflect upon our individual understandings of consciousness, and share our experiences. Have your dreams or day-dreams ever affected your waking life? Are altered states of value for understanding unknown, unseen realms? Or perhaps just insightful to the workings of our own minds? Should researchers be allowed to study altered states of consciousness more openly? Should individuals be allowed to seek altered states by legal means?
