Dear RET members and friends,
This is just a reminder to those of you who may be interested in our new
Special Interest Group (SIG), Reflections, which will begin this Sunday at
the home of Schera Chadwick & Ted Lollis, 9219 George Williams Road,
Knoxville, TN 37922. So bring some chips & dip, or other snacks, and join
in this, our initial, discussion. Please call 865.690.8742 if you'd like
more explicit directions to our place.
The topic for discussion at this first meeting will be a continuation from
Florence Wilden's presentation on Rousseau's Social Contract. To reduce
this scholarly treatise to a few of his own words, Rousseau's basic idea
was: "Each of us puts his person and all his power in common under the
supreme direction of the general will, and, in our corporate capacity, we
receive each member as an indivisible part of the whole."
This language is somewhat dated; perhaps today's version might be to simply
as the question: "What sense of responsibility toward our greater society
do each of us have?"
Since this topic of "social concern" is frequently addressed on this
discussion list, we expect many different opinions to be shared and a lively
dialogue to be enjoyed. Next month attendees will bring their own
suggestions for future dialogue topics, and the attendees will select the
topic (and facilitator) for the April meeting.
See you Sunday,
Schera and Ted
