Oak Ridge Forum on Religion/Science
The next meeting of the Oak Ridge Forum on Religion and Science is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd, 2005, in the Undercroft of St. Stephens Episcopal Church at 212 North Tulane Avenue, Oak Ridge.

A social session is planned for 11:00 am, followed by a buffet lunch at 11:30 am catered by the Soup Kitchen, and then by the following event:

Prof. Amand Lucas will speak on "Scribbles that Changed the Course of Human Affairs"

"It is still an unending source of surprise for me to see how a few scribbles on a blackboard or on a sheet of paper could change the course of human affairs" - S. Ulam

The subject matter of the present lecture is inspired from this quotation by the great polish mathematician Stanislaw Ulam. In the present lecture I only modestly hope to share with you that sense of constant surprise so eloquently expressed by Ulam, by discussing several world-changing discoveries which happen to be comprehensible on the basis of just two particular mathematical “scribbles”, the linear diffusion equation and the wave equation.

Prof. Lucas received his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Liege, Belgium. Since retirement from the University of Namur, Belgium, where he taught physics, carried out research in many different fields, and lectured at numerous Universities all over the world, he has been traveling, writing and doing research with grad students. He has many interests and writes remarkably well and prolifically about them. Among many other things he has produced and designed the video "DNA: From Light to Life" a breathtaking blend of music, poetry and science. Recently he has written about the Farm Hall transcripts and their implications for the role of Heisenberg in the Nazi nuclear program.

Spouses and friends are cordially invited. We will appreciate your sending the names and e-addresses of those who might be interested in attending.

The cost of lunch and incidentals for this event is $8.00 per person. We ask that you notify us by e-mail to rritchie16@comcast.net by Wednesday, June 22nd, with the number in your party that expect to attend. Alternatively a phone call to 483-8998 with this information will be appreciated.

We are experimenting with a new feature for our website at www.oakridgefrs.net; we will publish drafts of articles where the authors would appreciate comments.

We note that Prof. Lucas will present a lecture on "The German Uranium Club under the Third Reich" on Tuesday , June 21st, at 6:30pm in the Pollard Auditorium. This is a part of the Summer Science series of Oak Ridge Associated Universities and is open to the public.
