Subject: The January 20th, 2005, Meeting of the Forum on Religion and Science

Dear Friends,

The next meeting of the Oak Ridge Forum on Religion and Science is scheduled for Thursday, January 20th, 2005, in the A&B room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

A social session is planned for 11:00 am, followed by a buffet lunch at 11:30 am catered by the Soup Kitchen, and then by the following event:

Dr. Stuart Adkinson will discuss "An Examination of the Validity of the Worldviews of Christianity and Science"

A person’s worldview is an integrated network of their fundamental beliefs. These fundamental beliefs are referred to as the presuppositions of their worldview. “They determine how a person sees his experience (as colored glasses affect our vision). Everything is organized and interrelated in one’s system of thought by one’s presuppositions. They exercise pervasive and systematic control over one’s interpretation of experience, and they govern how one lives their life. Despite the vital role that these presuppositions play in one’s life, a person may not be conscious of these beliefs, nor fact that they constitute their worldview. This presentation will discuss the formation of worldviews and the nature of valid worldviews. The presentation will examine the worldview of science, and rather than examining the world view of religion, in general, will examine the worldview of Christianity, specifically. This presentation tries to show that while some beliefs of Christianity are beyond reason, these beliefs are not unreasonable.

Spouses and friends are cordially invited. We will appreciate your sending the names and e-addresses of those who might be interested so that we may send invitations to them.

The cost of lunch and incidentals for this event is $7.00 per person. We ask that you notify us by e-mail to rritchie16@comcast.net by Wednesday, January 19th, with the number in your party that expect to attend . Alternatively a phone call to 483-8998 with this information will be appreciated. Since the A& B room will serve only 60 people in a buffet lunch we encourage your early reservation.

We are experimenting with a new feature for the website; we will publish drafts of articles where the authors would appreciate comments. Sam Hurst has drafted [A God Hypothesis] to be posted on the web for your comments. Note that there is a close parallel with our next talk by Stuart Atkinson

Please jot down some of your favorite quotes and some books or articles that have turned you on. If you would like, please write “submitted by---------“ and send these to Josh at roswell321@hotmail.com.
