David Tandy to Address RET|
The Rationalists of East Tennessee (RET) are pleased to announce that Distinguished Professor of Humanities Dr. David Tandy will present a talk on Sunday, July 20, at 10:30 at the Candy Factory Board Room (second floor). In a program entitled "Nothing Comes from Nothing," Tandy will speak on the similarities and the overlap of mythologies throughout history. Time for discussion of the topic has been scheduled for after the program.
Dr. Tandy holds a Bachelor's degree in Greek from Yale College and an M.A, an M.Phil, and a Ph.D in Classical Philology from Yale University. He has been teaching Classics at the University of Tennessee since 1980 and currently serves as the chair of the department. His publications include "From Political Economy to Anthropology: Situating Economic Life in Past Societies" (editor), "Hesiod's Works and Days. Introduction and Commentary for the Social Sciences" (with Walter C. Neale), "Warriors into Traders: The Power of the Market in Early Greece," and "Prehistory and History: Ethnicity, Class and Political Economy." He currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Tennessee Classical Association, as Tennessee State Outreach Coordinator of the American Philological Association, and as Director of South Knoxville Heritage Center.
"It's a thrill for us to have access to scholars like Dr. Tandy," said Dave Buck, president of RET. "An important part of our mission includes providing opportunites for our local academic resources to reach the public, and this is a topic of particular interest to many of our members."
